3 Negotiation Tips from an Ex-Amazon Principal Engineer & Rora's Founder

Your Work Will Never Speak For Itself

Elite technical talent hire a Rora to negotiate job offers, career development, and promotions.

Inside work, advocate your ideas successfully and navigate interpersonal dynamics effectively.

Negotiate Better

Negotiate with more data, experience, and tactics to achieve results you did not know were possible.

More Influence

Influence your manager, company leaders, and peers to hear you and see your side.

Hard Conversations

Create alignment in disagreement rather than more conflict. Manage interpersonal stress.

Pricing

We charge as a percentage of the offer increased.

No increase, no fee.

We have never charged a client any amount they were not satisfied with.

People Block Career Growth, Not Code

Do you overlook soft skills and emotional intelligence? The greatest blockers to your career are typically not technical, they are political. Here's what you get:

Negotiate with 10X More Expertise

We negotiate hundreds of times a month with dozens of companies. We know the market in real time and to a depth not available publicly.

Not Just Compensation

Get better projects, increase your influence, or more visibility, which result in faster promotions and 10X career development.

A Relationship You Can Trust

We are available on-demand and focused on achieving your goals more than any mentor ever will be.

Level Up Your Soft Skill Habits

Do you see speaking up for yourself and being a team player as mutually exclusive at work? How intentional are you about how you communicate and frame your words?

Destructive Modesty

You are a team player but you believe speaking up for yourself risks damaging relationships or your career.

Crippling Ego

You speak up for yourself easily but people don't listen to you. Your ideas fail to get accepted. You lack influence despite your efforts.

Curious Advocacy

You advocate for your ideas successfully because you have the trust of others. You achieve win-win solutions rather than win-lose.

Who Is Identifying the Blindspots in Your Career?

Professionals who are serious about their career growth and development invest in this edge.

You should know where your focus should be and where you should delegate.

Thanks to my advisor and the team at Rora I got a ~$250K increase on my remote Facebook offer! The whole process was very smooth, and I wouldn’t hesitate to use the service for any future negotiations. I found the regular calls with my advisor where we walked through strategy and discussed the scripts to be extremely helpful. Not only did it help with this negotiation, but I also learned a lot of useful negotiation tactics that I’ve already started to use in other situations.

Coming from a non-FAANG background, I was shocked to find out how much I could be earning. Before I signed up with Rora, I made the mistake of telling Amazon my current compensation. Thankfully, Rora knew exactly how to fix it and ended up getting me an offer that was 2.3X what I previously made and more than $600K higher than Amazon’s initial offer!

Stephen Commisso
,
Principal Software Engineer at Amazon

The Rora team has been phenomenal from day one to the end of negotiations/job search. From planning the application timeline to working out negotiation scenarios, they consistently provided quality/timely advice that made a difference in my negotiation outcome. Highly recommended.

PhD Computer Science at NYU, Principal Research Scientist

I reached the goal that I didn't imagine could come true. I would highly recommend Rora, especially if you're a fresh grad phd, because this is an area that they specialize in, and very few (if any) other firm has expertise on.

When you thought that you have overcome the interview hurdle, the negotiation process that follows can prove equally challenging. Up against recruiters who are well familiar with the process, I've encountered a range of tactics from deadline pressure, threat of offer withdrawal, to being dropped from a matched team. Working with a Rora Advocate meant having a guide to navigate through this tricky process. We worked together to develop a game-plan at every step, giving me the confidence to take more calculated risks with the recruiters. The result was a significant increase to my base salary, equity and sign-on bonus/

I believe that had I not worked with Rora, my final offer would likely have been over $50k below the offer I accepted (or perhaps even over $100k below). Rora was super helpful in many ways throughout the process: (1) They provided helpful advice on setting timelines for the interview/offer/negotiation processes, (2) they provided a ton of useful data about previous offers Rora clients had received, and used this data to help me know what I should ask for at various points during my negotiation process, and (3) they helped me be calm and prepared during all of my calls with recruiters and hiring managers, by helping me write scripts and better know what to expect from these calls. I would highly recommend Rora to anyone who is going through a job search!

Avner May
,
PhD Computer Science at Stanford, Research Scientist

Rora was very understanding and respectful of my accelerated timeline and desire to push for something right away. I am grateful for the support and guidance they provided me as I was able to interview, negotiate and accept a final offer with a significantly improved amount of compensation.

Taylor Killian
,
PhD Computer Science at University of Toronto, Research Scientist

I learned a tremendous amount about my employers and future managers by negotiating and going through Rora's process. I also believe that this will help me negotiate with my employer (and others) in the future. In sum, Rora helped me to recognize my value as a professional and to set the bar high for my employer and future roles as well. This not only significantly increases your present-day income but also all future income as well as how you perceive your individual value. Truly transformative!

David Bellamy

PhD Biochemistry at Harvard, Research Scientist

Rora has lot of experience with negotiation processes across companies, and so have data on pay packages and great advice on how to better structure asks based on qualifications / leverage. I highly recommend them!

Questions Before Joining?

Why hire a career agent?

The biggest causes of failure in our careers are from failing to solve people problems, not from failing to solve technical problems.

You could be leaving hundreds of thousands of dollars on the table because you don't negotiate your job offer effectively. You could be wasting years in your job because you don't know how to negotiate inside your job effectively.

Our goal is to build a long term relationship supporting you in creating a vocation. This is where we make our profit as a business.

Why pay for this?

Yes, paying for professional support feels expensive. Do you know what is 100X more expensive? Failure. Termination. Quitting. Missing out on a big opportunity because the problem you were not able to solve was interpersonal, not technical.

The cheapest dollar to spend on your career is not later when you’ve failed or when you’re in a midlife crisis; it’s to avoid failure or the cost of success from the beginning.

How do you charge?

We charge as a % of the negotiated delta of the job offer we help you negotiate. No increase, no fee. Our company does not survive unless we impact your career.

Aren't you incentivized to risk my job offer?

No, because our service includes supporting you to negotiate inside your role as well. While we charge on the upside of the offer negotiation we sustain our business profitably by building a long term relationship with you and advancing your career in the long term.

When should I apply?

You should apply when you are starting to look for a new full time position. The strategy for your negotiation begins as soon as you reach out to a company. If you’re already negotiating we can still help, but please reach out ASAP since your need is time sensitive.

Who qualifies?

STEM PhDs and postdocs who are entering industry or STEM PhDs working in technology, quant finance, and bio-technology. Senior software engineers or higher level, typically 7 or more years of experience.

How do you work?

We work with you 1:1 to negotiate job offers, raises, promotions and inside work, help you advocate your ideas successfully and navigate interpersonal dynamics effectively.

If I’m experienced at negotiating is it worth it?

We have helped professionals with 20+ years of experience negotiate better than they would on their own. We have done L9 offer negotiations worth tens of millions of dollars. That being said, we can’t guarantee our impact, which is why we have a Pay What You Think is Fair Guarantee. If you don’t agree we had an impact outside of what you would have done on your own, then Rora is free.

Can I lose my offer from negotiating?

Yes, it is possible. We have the data to know that it is exceedingly rare, less than 1% of the time. Your risk also depends on how you negotiate – we identify the signals when you are at risk, and manage that risk appropriately.
