    Stripe Salary Negotiation Guide

Do we like negotiating with Stripe?

Not really. Stripe claims to have a no negotiation policy. This is false - we have had a 100% success rate negotiating with Stripe in 2022. That said, it's an uphill battle, and you need to be prepared to handle a lot of pushback.

    Stripe's compensation structure

    • Base salary
    • RSUs (granted yearly, unfortunately)
    • Signing bonus
    • Annual performance bonus

Stripe has started offering single-year vesting schedules. This means that the dollar amount won't vary every year, but the number of shares you receive will change depending on whether the stock price rises or falls. They've severely limited your upside (at a pre-IPO company). This change is not good for employees.

    Stripe performance bonus targets

    • Stripe L1 - 10%
    • Stripe L2 - 10%
    • Stripe L3 - 15%
    • Stripe L4 - 20%
    • Stripe L5 - 25%

    Stripe's approach to remote pay

Stripe's compensation is location dependent. Stripe was offering $20k to employees who moved to a permanent remote role during Covid-19, this also involved taking a 10% pay cut in base salary. We regularly see a reduction in overall compensation across base salary and equity when a fully remote role is offered.

    Stripe's relocation package

Stripe offers a competitive relocation package. This does vary based on a number of factors, but we've seen candidates get $20K for domestic moves.

    Most negotiable component

Again, Stripe claims to have a no negotiation policy. At Rora, we have successfully negotiated all comp components, but it's clear that signing bonus is the most negotiable component at Stripe. Since Stripe has very competitive compensation packages from the get-go, the ranges for signing bonuses are not as large as their competitors. For example, the upper limit for the signing bonus of an L3b Senior Software Engineer is $60k, while an E5 engineer at Facebook can secure a signing bonus of up to $100k.

    Does Stripe require written offers?

Stripe recruiters are more likely to push back on negotiating vs. asking for competing offers in writing. In our experience they only ask for a breakdown of your competing opportunities once you convince them to negotiate.

Will Stripe go above band if I have a strong competing offer?

Stripe only goes above band for candidates on extremely rare occasion, in part due to their very competitive compensation packages. You'll have a greater chance of getting upleveled to keep up with strong competitive cross offers.

Is my hiring manager relationship important at Stripe?

Stripe has a centralized compensation team, and as a result, the hiring manager does not have much influence over your compensation. For very senior candidates this changes.

    Our Clients Love Rora

Coming from a non-FAANG background, I was shocked to find out how much I could be earning. Before I signed up with Rora, I made the mistake of telling Amazon my current compensation. Thankfully, Rora knew exactly how to fix it and ended up getting me an offer that was 2.3X what I previously made and more than $600K higher than Amazon’s initial offer!

Through several weeks of interviews, Ganesh was always available to make sure I knew what to say for each conversation. I interviewed with start ups, Google, Facebook and Amazon and was really impressed that Rora knew the comp ranges and were able to give me tailored advice for each – even the start ups.

There ended up being two particularly complex moments in my negotiation. One of the start-ups I had a personal relationship with and I wasn’t sure how it would affect the negotiation. I like that there was a focus on my individual circumstances and that they were leveraged to get me a higher offer. The other situation is that Amazon made a mistake on my written offer and initially wouldn’t rectify it. Ganesh was able to guide me through a challenging conversation to get it resolved.
